Have a Ball, Ya’ll!!

One thing I’ve always wanted to make is a crocheted baby ball. It makes a wonderful first toy! A crocheted or knitted ball is soft and easy to grab. It’s even huggable! So, I went in search of patterns. The first pattern I tried involved crocheting in rounds using a stitch marker. Things quickly spun out of control! Maybe I should have moved the marker down with each round? Perhaps I’ll try it again…sometime. Not to be discouraged so soon, I tried a pattern crocheted in two parts. Things were looking pretty good until I realized that one half was larger than the other. Believe me, I tried to force fit it. No good.

Hmmmm. Well I can crochet booties that are sized the same, left foot bootie and right foot booties match. So, I should be able to make two halves of a ball match, right? You bet! And so, voila! I present to you my first and second crocheted balls.

Yes, the second ball is larger than the first one. I used a larger hook for the second one.

I have to ask. How do you keep up with stitches and rows completed? Do you use a stitch counter? Or, do you do it like I do with pen and pad? I find it helps my concentration to actually write it down.
